Top Three Causes of Trucking Accidents Examined

July 07, 2020

(USA) — Statistics indicate that about 44% of all two-vehicle accidents where one of the vehicles is a large truck may be attributed to the driver of the truck. Studies show that there are several principal reasons why catastrophic collisions occur. Driving too fast, experiencing braking problems, and lack of familiarity with the roadway are the most commonly cited reasons for truck drivers causing a collision, according to TRUCKER.COM.

Statistics generated by a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration study of large truck accident causation, indicated that drivers are too willing to take chances when operating large vehicles. All too often, trucks travel at excessive speeds when compared to the roadway conditions, weather conditions and traffic conditions. The numbers indicate that large trucks that are speeding are 670% more likely to be at fault for the crash as compared to when speed did not figure into the collision.

Excessive speed is not necessarily dependent upon the posted speed limit. Rather, speed is dictated by the amount of moisture on the roads as well as the amount of traffic and visibility.

Braking failures were also a big reason large truck crashes occurred. Approximately 30% of all truck accidents analyzed revealed the presence of a braking problem that led to a crash. The combination of excessive truck speeds plus poor braking capacity leads to catastrophe.

Truck drivers who failed to appreciate and plan a trip beforehand have an increased likelihood of a crash by 100% compared to those truck drivers who prepared in advance. Truck drivers on occasion prefer to tackle roads as they encounter them rather than plot their trip before departing.
