The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Releases Early Crash Numbers for 2019

June 22, 2020

USA-  Traffic deaths declined in 2019 as compared to 2018, according to CRASHSTATS.NHTSA.DOT.GOV. Based on current data, it appears that 36,120 people were tragically killed in motor vehicle crashes last year. If accurate, the numbers show a drop of 1.2 percent as compared to 2018.*

The number of traffic fatalities dropped significantly in some parts of the country, but in one region, the fatalities rose by two percent. The NHTSA divides the nation into ten regions. What is termed Region 4 is home to Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee. Sadly, this part of the country experienced a rise in fatal crashes last year.

The number of driver deaths overall dropped by three percent, and the number of passenger fatalities declined by four percent. Motorcyclists saw a small one percent decrease in fatalities. Assuming the numbers are accurate, fewer pedestrians and cyclists were killed in 2019 than in 2018.

Large truck crash fatalities appear to have increased by one percent. The numbers also suggest that there was a rise in deadly crashes involving drivers ages 65 and up.
