Truck Parking Legislation Gains Bipartisan Approval
USA- Freightwaves.com writes that a bill allocating $755 million in federal funds for new truck parking spaces was introduced this week. The Truck Parking Safety Act would use money from the United States Department of Transportation to construct new parking for trucks or to convert rest stops and weigh stations into parking facilities for trucks.*
The legislation addresses concerns over trucker fatigue and the lack of options for truck drivers to stop and get much-needed rest when on the road. More locations for these workers to stop and rest will provide them with options other than continuing to drive when they are tired, or parking on the shoulder when they are at risk of being involved in a crash. By lowering the number of fatigued drivers, proponents of the bill argue that it will make the highways safer for all users.
According to some in the trucking industry, the bill is a much-needed fix to a problem that puts long-haul truckers and those who share the road with them at a higher risk of being in a crash. Drivers would like to avoid stopping on the roadside where they become a hazard to other motorists and are at risk of being injured themselves. In many parts of the country, though, this is maybe their only option.
Driver fatigue is one of the major problems facing truck drivers. Current regulations allow truckers to operate their massive vehicles for long stretches, up to eleven hours at a time. However, the risk of being involved in a collision doubles once a driver has been behind the wheel for eight hours.
