Truck Driver Hours Extended Because of Coronavirus: Could a Resulting Increase in Coffee Consumption Put People at Risk?
USA- Fleetowner.com writes that truck drivers who drink coffee and energy drinks in larger quantities are more likely to be involved in crashes than those who drink just one cup of coffee a day. As a result of the coronavirus, truck drivers' hours-of-service rules have been put on hold, meaning that many drivers will be traveling for extremely long stretches of time.*
The result of the extended hours will likely be that more truck drivers will be ramping up their coffee consumption in an effort to stay awake and alert during their longer shifts. Studies indicate this might not be a problem immediately, but that long-term increases in consumption of coffee could potentially put truck drivers and those on the road with them at higher risk of crashes.
Nearly six percent more truck drivers who drink large amounts of coffee or energy drinks reported having had a crash in the previous three years than those drivers who consume smaller amounts, such as one cup of coffee per day. The study looked at 3,000 truckers throughout eight states. When it comes to drivers who consumed five or more cups of coffee a day, other problems were noted as well, including poorer sleep, more alcohol consumption, poor diets, more likelihood of smoking, and lower health.
The study did not determine that the consumption of coffee was the cause of other unhealthy habits or chances of crashing. However, high rates of coffee drinking might be linked to a less healthy lifestyle.
The researchers stated that more studies are needed in order to get a better picture of the impact of coffee consumption on work and health, and the link to other unhealthy habits.
