Plaintiff’s Collect Large Sums in Truck Accident Claims in Southeastern U.S.

November 27, 2019

USA- Propertycasualty360.com writes that victims in accidents involving large trucks are getting more substantial verdicts in the southeastern United States. The trend indicates a rise starting in 2010, followed by a sharp spike from 2016 to 2019.*

Fatal large truck crashes are also on the rise across the country, even as other forms of deadly accidents are dropping. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 2018 saw about 1,000 fewer traffic-related deaths than 2017. Still, 36,560 people lost their lives on American roadways last year.

The NHTSA credits newer vehicles with advanced safety technology and crash avoidance systems with the decline in deadly accidents. However, while the total number indicates a slight improvement, specific categories of crashes increased.

One of the areas that saw more accidents last year is accidents involving large trucks. Fatal large truck accidents reached a 29-year high last year. The NHTSA documented an increase of about one percent in large truck occupant deaths.

While the numbers are disturbing, they are, in part, a result of more trucks being on the roadways. More freight-carrying vehicles are currently on the road than at any point in history. Some in the industry blame distracted driving for the higher number of fatalities.

There is hope for improvements when it comes to trucking crashes. Newer trucks, like more modern passenger vehicles, are coming equipped with far more technology designed to lower the risk of collisions. Emergency braking systems, warnings for lane departures, and cameras that help drivers see in blind spots and behind their vehicles are now becoming standard features in new trucks. It is too soon to say whether these features will be enough to curb the increasing death toll.
