Hamblen County Crash Kills One in Hamblen County, Tennessee

September 15, 2019

HAMBLEN COUNTY, Tenn. — A 46-year-old man died when he was hit by a semi-truck on Interstate 81. According to WBIR, the man died while trying to retrieve a bicycle than flew out of his pickup and onto the roadway. The Tennessee Highway Patrol arrived at the scene quickly to investigate. The troopers have determined that the driver of the tractor-trailer truck should not be charged criminally. Their decision could change depending on the outcome of the inquiry. *

Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers reported that the driver of an 18-wheeler could not avoid striking and killing the 46-year-old man from Johnson City. The troopers’ preliminary investigation reveals that the man who died was driving his pickup and lost a bicycle out of the bed of the pickup. Consequently, the man pulled his pickup over and attempted to retrieve the bike. The on-coming tractor-trailer truck driver, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers, swerved from the right lane into the left lane. There would be no indication at this time if the truck driver attempted to brake to avoid hitting the man. Witnesses say that the man tried to evade the oncoming big rig by jumping into the right lane from the middle of the road but did not get out of the way fast enough and was hit.

There are no charges currently pending against the operator of the tractor-trailer truck. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is continuing with their investigation. Investigators will consider many factors when trying to ascertain what happened and why the trucker could not avoid hitting the man. The report from WBIR does not indicate the time of the accident or what the atmospheric conditions were when the crash occurred. The report does not describe the traffic conditions at the time of the crash either. There was no word from the investigators when their final report would be completed.
