Nine Crashes Plague Interstate 55 in Desoto County, Mississippi

July 26, 2020

DESOTO COUNTY, MS- writes that a crash on Interstate 55 occurred close to the exit at Hernando.  In total, there were nine separate crash events, and 25 to 30 cars appear to have been involved in the incidents. At least four people sustained injuries in the collisions and were reportedly transported to hospitals.*

Drivers were told to avoid the southbound traffic lanes.

The identities of those involved and the extent of their injuries were not reported, but one person is said to have broken his or her arm.

Crashes often take place after earlier traffic incidents. Such events are termed secondary crashes. One study indicated that more than nine percent of crashes are secondary to earlier collisions. Another 6.2 percent of incidents are tertiary to an earlier accident. For every ten collisions that take place, one secondary crash will occur. Disabled vehicles also lead to collisions in one out of 54 cases.

When a collision occurs, it often leads to roadway congestion. The longer that it takes responders to clear the scene, the greater the risk of a secondary crash becomes. The danger of a secondary incident rises about one percent for every two or three minutes in which the traffic is slowed by a response to an earlier wreck. Because of this, researchers say that rapidly responding to collisions and clearing the scene will make roads safer and reduce the number of collisions.

One way that crashes could be reduced in the future is through the use of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technology. Such systems may help drivers avoid initials incidents, reduce congestion, and could lower the chances of a secondary collision as well by exchanging data between vehicles.
