Motorcycle Crash Seriously Injures One on Fair Oaks Road in Middle Valley, Tennessee (TN)

July 26, 2020

MIDDLE VALLEY, TN- writes that a crash in Middle Valley left a motorcyclist with severe injuries this week. The incident occurred in the mid-afternoon on Fair Oaks Road and involved the motorcycle and another vehicle.*

The victim sustained severe injuries, and responders transported him to a local hospital for treatment.

Motorcyclists face a number of dangers on the road, and not least of those is the risk posed by other drivers. Sadly, the danger of being overlooked by motorists in larger cars is a constant factor for motorcyclists.

Science has an explanation for the reason that so many motorcyclists are overlooked by drivers, even when the driver appears to look directly at the bike. The phenomenon is referred to as inattentional blindness. According to research, drivers experience this when driving, and it often does not bode well for those on two wheels.

Driving is complicated and involves the brain needing to sift through tremendous amounts of input. When trying to filter through the constant stream of information, brains sift out that which they deem less important in order to pay attention to more pressing matters. Unfortunately, motorcycles appear to fall low on the brain’s list of important input. As a result, not only to distracted drivers, or drivers with large blind spots fail to see motorcycles, but many drivers look and still do not register a motorcycle in plain view. It is incredibly important that drivers become aware of their potentially life-threatening potential for overlooking motorcycles. Extra caution and some training could help reduce these risks and make the roads safer for motorcyclists and everyone else.
