Drivers To Notice Changes on Interstate 75 North and Interstate 24 Near "Split"
TENNESSEE- Motorists in Georgia on Interstate 75 North headed toward Interstate 24 are now required to choose their lane one-quarter mile sooner than previously. In Tennessee, the road to Interstate 24 from the Welcome Center is now blocked. Several old Interstate 75 lanes are no longer operational, and the dividing point has been moved closer to Exit 1.*
While the configuration is temporary, drivers must get used to a detour taking them back to Interstate 24 West and the Split. The total detour is about six miles long.
The interstate and the exchanges were originally constructed in the 1950s and 1960s. Now the roadway must accommodate 100,000 vehicles each day. The outdated construction has led to the interchange earning a reputation for traffic jams and crashes.
Construction work being carried out will ultimately widen the ramps and roads, and change the ramp configuration.
According to a recent report published by the American Transportation Research Institute, the Split is one of the country's 100 worst bottlenecks. Chattanooga is home to two of the interchanges that made the list.
The project, which began in 2018, will cost an estimated $132.6 million. Motorists should be extra cautious in the area as they learn how to navigate the interchange.
