Tragic Boating Crash Reported in Nashville, Tennessee (TN)

April 30, 2020

NASHVILLE, TN- writes that a man died in a boating crash at Priest Lake close to the Four Corners Marina. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) reported that they received a call regarding a missing boater. A witness reported seeing a man and woman on a personal watercraft left the no-wake zone. The vessel then overturned. A friend of the couple was able to rescue the woman from the water but could not get to the male victim. The TWRA and emergency management from Davidson County then began to search for the victim and were able to locate the victim’s body close to the location where witnesses last saw him.*

The man did not have a life jacket or floatation device at the time. The incident is under investigation, and the name of the victim has not yet been reported. The tragedy is the most recent of eight fatal boating crashes to occur in Tennessee so far in 2020.

Personal watercraft, such as jet skis, are sometimes extremely dangerous. People often fail to realize the risks presented by these vessels. It is important to take certain steps to stay safe while using one of these devices. The Insurance Information Institute writes that in order to prevent injury while riding a personal watercraft, keep a safe distance between yourself and other vessels. About 80 percent of injuries and deaths involving these vessels occur when two of them collide. It is important to remember that personal watercraft are fast, and riders may have to make quick changes in direction.

People also should not attempt to jump the wake of other boats as it could lead to a crash with another vessel. Staying alert is also crucial in avoiding striking swimmers, scuba divers, or others on the water.
