Fewer Traffic Deaths in Tennessee As Pandemic Clears Roads
TENNESSEE- Tullahomanews.com writes that with fewer people on the road throughout the United States, there are now fewer traffic crashes and resulting injuries. The Vanderbilt University Medical Center reports that there will likely be 65 percent fewer motor vehicle accident admissions to the hospital, including people involved in vehicle collisions, motorcycle wrecks, or pedestrian collisions.*
One doctor spoke to reporters and said the reason is simple. With most people staying home, there are fewer people driving. He said that it appears that the Tennessee governor’s stay at home orders seem to have been followed in the state.
The state issued a stay at home order on April 2 to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Officials do not intend to extend the order into May. Traffic crashes leading to resulting deaths are down significantly, and when compared to the average number of fatalities for the last five Aprils, the state will likely see about 25 fewer car crash deaths. Based on projections, there will be 243 fatal or severe injury crashes in the state by the end of the month. As compared to the last two years, that number indicates a 49 percent drop in deaths.
Between March 29 and April 18, the number of adult trauma patients indicated a 22 percent decline as compared to the same period of time over the last three years. The trauma admissions typically include two types of incidents, blunt force injuries caused by car crashes and penetrating injuries, which typically result from gunshot wounds. While blunt force injuries are down significantly, the number of violent stabbings and gunshot injuries remains about the same as in previous years.
