Tragic Crash Kills Married Couple in Monroe County, Tennessee

March 24, 2020

MONROE COUNTY, TN- writes that a fatal crash took the lives of a married couple this week in Tennessee. The incident occurred in Monroe County close to the border of Blount County. The victims were identified as a 62-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman, both from Vonore.*

The couple was traveling northbound in a 1997 Toyota Tacoma when the driver attempted to turn left from a right-hand lane on US Highway 411. A 37-year-old man traveling south in a 1991 Ford 350 tried to swerve to the left to avoid the Toyota, but struck the vehicle and pushed the victims into a utility pole.

Reports indicate that both of the vehicles caught fire in the wreck. The 37-year-old man in the Ford was able to exit his truck and helped to get the couple out of the Toyota. No charges have been filed in relation to the crash, but reports indicate that the incident is still under investigation.

The victims had been married for 46, according to the woman’s obituary.

Left turns are inherently dangerous driving maneuvers. According to some research, about 31 percent of severe crashes, or those involving $100,000 or more in bodily injuries and property damage, are caused by a driver attempting to make a left turn.

More than half of all path-crossing collisions are the result of a motorist making a left turn. Left turns are also a factor in many deadly pedestrian incidents.

While eliminating left turns might sound like an extreme concept, the benefits may make such a move attractive to many. When UPS cut left turns out of their routes, they not only increased safety but saved about 10 million gallons of fuel and was able to deliver packages more quickly.
