Car Strikes Pedestrian in Oliver Springs, Tennessee

March 02, 2020

OLIVER SPRINGS, TN- writes that a pedestrian suffered injuries in a crash in Oliver Springs this week when a vehicle struck her in the late evening. The incident occurred on the Tri-County Boulevard. Police report that the driver came to a stop following the crash. The cause of the collision is not yet known. *

Pedestrians face a greater risk of being involved in accidents at night. Visibility is a major contributing factor in these incidents. Drivers often struggle to see people in the roadway, and headlights tend to do a poor job of illuminating the roadway. With the number of pedestrian deaths rising year after year, it is becoming increasingly important to find ways to prevent these types of collisions from occurring. One main factor that is driving the rising number of pedestrian deaths is the larger vehicles many Americans drive. SUVs come with greater risks to people walking on the road.

Although pedestrians are dying in higher numbers, people inside cars are becoming increasingly safer each year. One main reason people are safer inside of cars is crash avoidance technology. These features are making it easier for drivers to avoid being in crashes because their cars help them maintain their lane and alert them when a car is approaching in their blind spot.

Many hope that technology might be the answer to pedestrian crashes as well. Pedestrian detection technology is being designed, but so far, most systems are not adequately alerting drivers when people are on the road. The systems are not particularly effective at night when they are truly needed. Most pedestrians are killed after dark when drivers fail to see them.
