Car crashes are common. Tens of thousands of Americans die in vehicle wrecks every year. While the number of vehicle occupants dying in collisions is dropping, other types of crash deaths continue to rise, and vehicles still account for many accidental deaths across the nation. One frightening fact is that because crashes are so frequent, most people will be in not only one collision, but possibly three or four in the course of their lives. Insurance companies have done the math and found that most drivers will submit an insurance claim for a car accident about once every eighteen years. Fortunately, the vast majority of these incidents will not result in death. Only around three out of every 1,000 collisions in the United States are fatal. While the crashes might not be deadly, they can cause injuries and be expensive. Even minor collisions can cause thousands of dollars in damage to a vehicle. If injuries occur, the victims can be left with medical bills and, in some instances, lost wages.
While crashes are common, vehicle technology is helping drivers avoid many crashes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), crash avoidance features work, and drivers should invest in them.
