Nashville Pedestrians Reach Highest-Ever Rate of Fatalities in 2019
NASHVILLE, TN- Wsmv.com writes that 2019 was a historically bad year for pedestrians in Nashville. The city tragically lost dozens of lives in pedestrian wrecks, reaching a record level of deaths before the holiday season arrived.*
Safety advocates are disappointed in the high number of fatal incidents. Studies show that the number of fatal pedestrian incidents rises at night. Low visibility is often a factor in pedestrian crashes. Drivers are being told to use extra caution driving at night in the city as there is a risk of not seeing people near the road. Experts are also telling motorists to slow down. Traveling a little slower can save a pedestrian’s life.
Safety focused studies identified the most dangerous places to walk in the city. Old Hickory, Murfreesboro, Nolensville Pikes, and Gallatin all made the list. The riskiest places for pedestrians all had a few things in common. These roads have speed limits above 30 miles per hour, few crosswalks, multiple lanes and are used by many pedestrians who ride public transportation.
Most of the incidents, about 73 percent, occur at night, and most occur on roads controlled by the state. Additional lighting, better crosswalks, and lower speed limits could make a major difference in overall pedestrian safety.
