Pedestrian Suffers Severe Injuries in Crash in Paducah
PADUCAH, TN- Paducasun.com writes that a pedestrian suffered severe injuries in a crash that took place in Paducah over the weekend after a car struck him on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The 68-year-old man was transported to a hospital in Nashville via life flight. The injuries that the victim suffered are considered severe.*
The vehicle struck the man in the evening when the victim was trying to cross the road. The driver, a 41-year-old man from Paducah, stated that he was approaching a red light and slowed down. The light then turned to green, and he began to proceed through the intersection when he saw something on the left of his vehicle. The driver claims to have had no time to react before he struck the pedestrian. The vehicle involved in the collision was a 2008 Chevrolet Impala. Two witnesses also spoke to the police, including a driver behind the Impala and a man who was sitting outside on his porch at the time of the collision. Both confirmed the driver’s account of what transpired. Police are reconstructing the accident scene as a part of their investigation.
Pedestrian fatalities are occurring more often throughout the country. Vehicles are now being equipped with technology that will hopefully help drivers avoid many of these often-deadly crashes. Additionally, vehicle occupants are experiencing benefits from crash avoidance technology that helps drivers avoid crashes by maintaining a vehicle’s lane and alerting motorists when they are approaching something like another vehicle too quickly. Automatic braking systems even prevent rear-end collisions when drivers are not paying attention. The same features may someday work to avoid pedestrian crashes even when drivers fail to notice a person in the roadway. While these systems are being developed, they are not yet particularly effective to prevent pedestrian crashes.
