Tragic Accident Kills One in Hamblen County, Tennessee

January 22, 2020

HAMBLEN COUNTY, TN- writes that a tragic collision occurred in Tennessee early in the morning over the weekend. The crash took place when the victim, a 33-year-old man, was heading southbound on Andrew Johnson Highway. The Tennessee Highway Patrol reports that the victim was traveling over a hill in his GMC pickup truck when he drifted over the center line, and collided with a Nissan SUV that was traveling in the opposite direction.*

The other driver, a 38-year-old woman, also sustained severe injuries in the incident. Police stated that the victim was not using his seatbelt at the time of the crash, and said that he might have survived if he had buckled up.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), seatbelt usage in Tennessee is slightly lower than the national average. Using a seatbelt can lessen the risk of being involved in a deadly crash by around half. Seatbelts prevent vehicle ejections in most cases, which greatly reduces the risk of death. By wearing a seatbelt, drivers also ensure that their airbags will deploy in the appropriate place. Airbags are designed to protect people by deploying in the best location to prevent the person from striking a harder surface. By failing to use a seatbelt, occupants not only fail to gain the protective benefit of using the restraint, but they also lessen or eliminate the benefits of other safety features included in their vehicle.

It is illegal for drivers, front-seat passengers, and children to travel in a vehicle without a seatbelt in Tennessee. While adults in the back of a vehicle are not required to use a seatbelt, they are strongly advised to for their safety and the safety of others in the vehicle.
