SHELBY COUNTY, TN. – According to a news report posted online at wsmv.com, two workers with the Tennessee Department of Transportation were tragically killed in a vehicle crash on Interstate 40 in Shelby County, Tennessee. A Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper was also injured in the accident, according to the report.*

The accident happened early in the morning in a construction zone along I-40 near Memphis, Tennessee. Authorities and WSMV report that at approximately 4 a.m., a crew with A&A Safety contracted by the Tennessee DOT was working on replacement of snow plowable markers along the interstate. They were inside of a mobile work zone that had one lane closed on the interstate.

Somehow, multiple vehicles crashed in the area. The report did not say how many vehicles were involved in the accident, nor did it describe any of the vehicles involved. It is not clear how the collision took place or what events transpired leading to the crash.

WSMV reports that two of the construction workers were tragically killed in the accident. They were not identified in the report. No statement from the DOT or A&A Safety was included in the news report.

In addition, WSMV states that a Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper sustained injuries in the collision. The Trooper was also not identified, and the extent of his injuries was not reported. He was reportedly transported to a hospital in the Memphis area for treatment.

The drivers of the vehicles involved in the wreck were not identified, and it is unclear if anyone in these vehicles was injured. Officials expected the interstate to be closed for several hours following the crash in order for crews to investigate at the scene. Investigation into the accident continues, and authorities have not yet said whether they anticipate charges in the case.
