Man Tragically Killed in Morning Crash in Mountain City, Tennessee

October 15, 2019

MOUNTAIN CITY, TN- The writes that a man died in a tragic car crash on U.S. Highway 421 last week in Mountain City. The Tennessee Highway Patrol identified the victim as a 33-year-old man from Mountain City. The victim was traveling southbound in a 2000 GMC Sierra Truck when he crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a 2015 Subaru Forrester SUV driven by a 33-year-old man from Fleetwood, North Carolina.*

Reports have not stated the condition of the driver of the Subaru. The GMC ended up in a ditch on the side of the road, and the Subaru overturned in a ditch as well.

A 36-year-old man was a passenger in the GMC, and reports indicate that he did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

Police have not yet determined the cause of the deadly accident. It is easier than many people realize to be involved in a fatal head-on collision. Unfortunately, even responsible and attentive drivers end up injured and killed in these serious types of wrecks. When a highway or road is not divided by a median or other barrier, a driver who takes their eyes off of the road for just a second can veer over the center line and into oncoming vehicles. The person driving in the correct direction will not be able to react because of the speed at which the two cars are approaching one another. Of course, the force in these accidents is terrible. Even if vehicles are traveling 45 miles an hour, the chance of a fatality is exceptionally high.

One way to limit these types of accidents is for road design to include medians and barriers any time that a speed limit is more than 40 miles per hour.
