Volunteer Firefighter Hit by Car on Corinth Dr. in Oconee County, South Carolina

October 01, 2019

OCONEE COUNTY, SC. – According to an online news article published at foxcarolina.com, a volunteer firefighter was hit by a car while responding to a vehicle accident on Corinth Drive in Oconee County, South Carolina. The firefighter, a member of the Corinth-Shiloh Volunteer Fire Department, was injured in the collision and hospitalized.*

The accident happened in the evening at the crossing of Corinth Drive with Old Clemson Highway. South Carolina Highway Patrol and Fox Carolina report that around 7 p.m., emergency responders were at the intersection, assisting at the scene of a prior vehicle accident. The details of this accident were not provided in the news report. Troopers say that while crews were still at the scene, a 2003 Chevrolet (model not reported) ran into one of the firefighters.

The full events of the incident have not been reported. According to the news report, the Chevy driver was headed west on Old Clemson Highway and was traveling at a high rate of speed. Fox Carolina states that the driver, who was not identified in the news report, was charged with driving too fast for conditions.

Fox Carolina reports that the firefighter who was struck by the Chevy sustained multiple injuries and was taken to a local hospital. His injuries were said to be not life-threatening. The report indicates he is a six-year member of Corinth-Shiloh Volunteer Fire Department who recently won an award for his service. He is also reportedly a retired Navy pilot and a foreign language teacher at Pickens High School.

Following the accident, the fire department posted a message on social media, saying that the firefighter had a long road ahead in his recovery but that he was in “good spirits.” A chili cookoff has been planned to help him and his family with expenses.
