South Carolina has experienced more pedestrian deaths in 2019 than usual. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, one in five traffic fatalities this year involved a pedestrian “Nighttime, that’s where we’re seeing most of these crashes with pedestrian,” Cpl. Sonny Collins stated. “So we want to make sure you understand as a pedestrian you have to walk on the shoulder or on the sidewalk, you cannot walk in the roadway.”
Per the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, pedestrian fatalities in the state went up by 60% between 2013 and 2017. This year, 48 individuals lost their lives in accidents throughout the state. Ten of these accidents involved pedestrians.
“There’s so many variables that play into this,” Collins said. “It’s just really all we can do at this point is educate the pedestrians as they’re walking up and down the road and also educating drivers on the dangers of being out there.”
The South Carolina Highway Patrol urges pedestrians to wear bright and reflective clothing when walking. This way, they are more visible to motorists.
