Tragic Pedestrian Crash Reported on Ruby Road in Darlington County, South Carolina, (SC)

July 29, 2020

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC- Wpde.com writes that a crash occurred this week in Darlington County, South Carolina, that killed one pedestrian. The incident took place on Ruby Road at Stonewall Street.*

The vehicle involved was identified as an SUV. According to investigators, the collision occurred in the later evening. The police are still carrying out the investigation and have not released the identities of the victim or the driver.

South Carolina is one of the more dangerous states for pedestrians. One recent study found that the Palmetto State is the fourth-worst in the country for pedestrian deaths. The report looked at data from a four year period to come up with its rankings. Not only is South Carolina a bad state for such incidents, but nationally the number of such crashes is on the rise. The states that had worse records that South Carolina included Florida, Delaware, and New Mexico.

Fortunately, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the number of fatal pedestrian crashes decreased in 2019 after increasing for several years. The early traffic fatality estimates suggest that overall traffic-related deaths dropped last year by 1.2 percent. The number of driver fatalities decreased three percent, passenger deaths went down four percent, motorcyclist fatalities decreased one percent, and pedestrian incidents dropped two percent. Cyclist fatalities declined as well, by three percent. Only large truck deaths rose according to the early numbers published.

Still, with a rise of three percent in 2018, which meant more pedestrians died in the United States that year than at any point since 1990, the number of fatal pedestrian crashes are still far too high.
