South Carolina's drivers are at a greater risk of being involved in a deadly collision than motorists in most of the nation. In fact, the state is the second-worst in the country in terms of dangerous roads. Metrics used to reach this ranking included a variety of bad driving behaviors, including speeding, drunk driving, traffic fatalities, and overall crashes.
The Palmetto State went up two spots in 2019 thanks mainly to its high number of drunk drivers. The state arrested 22,000 drivers for driving under the influence last year.
Another risk faced by motorists in South Carolina is distracted drivers. A separate study placed the state in third place when it comes to deadly crashes, and there is some speculation that distracted driving is another factor leading to dangerous roadways. In the course of a full year, police in South Carolina only cited 53 people for distracted driving. The problem is that unlike many other states, South Carolina lacks a ban on handheld electronics. While texting while driving is against the law, enforcing that regulation becomes extremely difficult when drivers are able to claim they were using their phones for a purpose that is not prohibited. Even drivers who are cited faced a fine that is far less than that in many other states making the law an ineffective deterrent.
