Motorcyclist Dies on Hawkins-Reynolds Road in Cherokee County, South Carolina (SC)

July 28, 2020

CHEROKEE COUNTY, SC- Wspa.com writes that one person died in a wreck involving a motorcycle and another vehicle in Cherokee County this week. The incident occurred in the later evening at the intersection of Hawkins-Reynolds Road and US Highway 221.*

Reports indicate that a motorcycle traveling on the highway and the pickup truck was crossing the intersection on Hawkins-Reynolds Road. The motorcyclist died at the site of the crash.

The county coroner identified the victim as a 26-year-old man from Gaffney.

Motorcyclists face a higher risk of being killed in a crash than are people in other vehicles. People who ride know that there are risks involved, but sadly, one of the dangers is mostly out of motorcyclists’ control. Other drivers often fail to see motorcycles on the road. Perhaps the reason is that drivers are distracted, maybe motorcycles being smaller makes them less visible, and perhaps there are even psychological phenomenons at play. Whatever the reason, the sad truth is that motorcyclists are frequently put at risk by others on the road.

One way a motorcyclist can decrease the dangers they are facing is to be ready to react. When approaching an intersection, motorcyclists should be prepared to apply the brakes. Keeping an eye on cars that are looking for an opportunity to make a left turn is also a good idea as these drivers often turn into the path of oncoming motorcyclists.

Other precautions that can help to reduce the risks include wearing bright-colored clothing and a helmet. Bright clothes make it less likely that a motorcyclist will be overlooked. Of course, helmets are the best way to protect from potentially fatal head injuries.
