Driver Strikes and Kills Cyclist in Tragic Crash on NC 191 in Buncombe County, North Carolina (NC)

July 23, 2020

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, NC- My40.tv writes that a cyclist died in Buncombe County this week when a car struck the woman on NC 191. The victim, identified as a 56-year-old woman from Columbia, South Carolina, was riding southbound on the highway at the time of the crash.*

The car that struck the woman was a Buick driven by a 25-year-old woman from Brevard.

Responders transported the victim to the Mission Hospital, but the woman died a short while after the crash.

According to police reports, the driver fled the scene prior to the arrival of officers. Police later located the woman, and she is now facing multiple charges, including felony hit-and-run and driving while intoxicated.

The authorities stated that additional charges are likely to follow.

Drunk driving is unfortunately common North and South Carolina. A recent report found that both Carolinas are in the top ten worst states for drunk drivers. The study viewed both DUI arrests and fatalities per capita in all 50 states and determined that North Carolina is the seventh-worst state, while South Carolina fell right behind it in eighth place.

Many of the states with the worst records for drunk driving are located in the south.

However, the worst overall states included Wyoming, South Dakota, and Montana.

While drunk driving rates dropped significantly over the last few decades, the number of motorists killed in these preventable collisions remains far too high. Each day, 30 lives are lost on average in drunk driving crashes. Annually, such numbers lead to more than 10,000 deaths nationwide. Driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or more is illegal everywhere in the country.
