Boat Crash Kills Woman in Lexington County, South Carolina

July 23, 2020

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC- Wltx.com writes that a woman died in a boating accident this weekend in South Carolina. The incident took place overnight on Lake Murray. The victim, identified as a twenty-year-old woman, was killed when the boat crashed into a tree, causing the tree to fall onto the vessel.*

The woman was a passenger on the pontoon boat, and the driver was attempting to dock the vessel when reports state the engine cut off. The operator was then unable to control the boat, and it crashed.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the tragic accident.

Another boat crash also took place this week in Saluda County. In that incident, two vessels collided in the late evening. One of the vessels was reported as a bass boat, and the other was a pontoon. Four people sustained injuries in that collision.

That crash is under investigation, but police do not believe that alcohol was a contributing factor.

A tubing accident occurred in Greenville just one day later. In that incident, a sixteen-foot boat was pulling two juveniles who were riding on a tube. The tube collided with a docked vessel, and both of the passengers suffered injuries. One of the victims is now in critical condition, and the other sustained severe injuries, including a broken leg. That crash is also still under investigation.

When it comes to boating, safety experts state that everyone should wear a life jacket. Although regulations regarding when a life jacket may or may not be legally required, wearing one is the best way to avoid tragedy. More than three-quarters of boating victims drown, and more were not wearing life jackets.
