Tragic Hit-and-Run Kills One in Clarendon, South Carolina (SC)

July 15, 2020

CLARENDON, SC- writes that a fatal crash took place in South Carolina this week. The incident occurred in Clarendon County in the late evening on Moses Dingle Road close to its intersection with SC-260.*

Reports indicate that the victim was a cyclist, identified as a 59-year-old man from Manning. Responders transported the man to the McCleod Health Clarendon hospital, but he died about one and a half hours after the wreck.

The driver fled the scene, and police are still searching for the suspect and the vehicle.

According to reports, the car involved in the collision had tinted windows and likely has one of its side windows broken. There could also be damage to the front and hood of the car.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation and has requested that anyone with information contact their office or Crime Stoppers.

According to a report carried out by the AAA, South Carolina is among the top ten states when it comes to deadly hit-and-run crashes. The state ranks ninth out of all 50 in terms of per capita deaths caused by hit-and-run crashes.

The top three states for such incidents include New Mexico, Louisiana, and Florida.

Overall, hit-and-run fatalities have been increasing nationally for several years. The most likely victims to be killed in these collisions are pedestrians and cyclists. Cars that strike vulnerable road users often remain drivable, meaning that the motorists are able to flee even after severe pedestrian accidents.

The results of AAA’s research did not include any explanation as to why these tragic crashes are continuing to occur more often every year.
