Studies indicate that South Carolina is one of the worst states for car crashes in the nation. A recent report placed the Palmetto State in third place out of all fifty states. According to that research, at least a part of South Carolina’s problem is the fact that it does not take an aggressive stance on distracted driving. While it is illegal to text and drive in the state, few people are ever cited for such a violation. In part, the low number of tickets is because, without a complete hands-free ban, the law is difficult to enforce. In the course of a full year, South Carolina officers only cited 53 people for distracted driving violations. The fine in those few instances was a minimum of just $25. Many other states are far more aggressive when it comes to addressing the roadway threats posed by distracted driving.
Fortunately, South Carolina is trying to implement its own hands-free law. While the efforts were postponed because of the outbreak of COVID-19, the new law will likely be passed in the near future.
Cutting down on instances of distracted driving only reduces one of the causes for the high number of fatal collisions in the state, though. The state ranked in second place in a recent study looking into drunk driving fatalities across the United States. Per capita, only Wyoming has more deaths caused by drunk motorists than South Carolina.
