Fixed object collisions lead to about one out of every five car crash deaths. Trees are the most frequently struck object along the side of the road. Almost half of these crashes involve trees, while utility poles are the next most likely object to be involved. Close to 50 percent of these collisions take place at night. Common causes of fixed object accidents include speeding, inattention, falling asleep, low visibility, and alcohol intoxication.
In 2018, these incidents led to 7,422 fatalities. While that number is disturbingly high, it actually represents a drop of six percent as compared to 2017.
Since 1979, the percent of all crash-deaths caused by fixed object accidents has stayed between nineteen and 23 percent.
