Driver Suffers Severe Injuries While Assessing Damage on their Car in Horry County, SC

May 05, 2020

HORRY COUNTY, SC- Wmbfnews.com writes that a crash took place in Horry County this week that left two people injured. Reports indicate that the incident led to traffic delays on Highway 501 in both directions in the area around the Carolina Forest. The incident happened in the afternoon on Carolina Forest Boulevard and involved three cars.*

One of the victims sustained severe injuries in the wreck, while another victim sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening. According to officers, two of the vehicles involved collided in what appears to have been a minor accident. The drivers both pulled to the side of the roadway. One of the drivers exited their car and was assessing the damage to his vehicle when another driver reportedly made an improper turn and struck the man.

Secondary crashes are common events that involve a second collision that occurs following another crash. For instance, in many cases, a crash will take place because of the traffic congestion that an earlier incident has caused. In other situations, the secondary crash is the result of drivers being distracted by the aftermath of another accident. More than nine percent of all collisions are secondary crashes. About one in every ten collisions will result in a secondary wreck.

Technology may soon help motorists avoid such instances through the use of connected vehicle systems. This technology will allow vehicles to communicate with one another, and drivers entering the area around a crash site will be alerted of an earlier incident and the need for caution. Early studies are showing that this technology will be able to reduce the number of secondary collisions by improving drivers’ situational awareness.
