Tragic Crash Kills Motorcyclist on Wade Hampton Boulevard in Greer, South Carolina (SC)

April 30, 2020

GREER, SC- writes that a motorcyclist died in a crash in Greer this week on Wade Hampton Boulevard. Police stated that the incident took place at the intersection with West Poinsett Street in the early evening.*

Reports indicate that an SUV and a motorcycle collided, leading to the motorcyclist sustaining fatal injuries. The authorities closed down the intersection while officers investigated the wreck.

Motorcycles can be dangerous because they lack many protective features that are available to drivers and passengers in cars and other vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the number of fatal motorcycle crashes declined in 2018 by around five percent. Still, motorcyclists make up a disproportionately high number of crash victims. The best step for motorcyclists to take to increase their own safety is to use a helmet. The Department of Transportation (DOT) symbol is used to mark helmets that meet current safety standards.

Of course, there is only so much you can do to protect yourself if other drivers on the road fail to pay attention. One of the most common types of motorcycle crashes occurs when a driver in a larger vehicle crosses into the path of the motorcycle while making a left turn. Drivers frequently overlook smaller vehicles such as motorcycles, and the consequences are often devastating for the person on the bike.

Experts say that in order to avoid one of these crashes, motorcyclists have to look out for cars that could be getting ready to turn. The best action for a motorcyclist to take in these instances is to slow down as a reduction in speed could mean the difference between life and death.
