Car Strikes and Kills Pedestrian in South Carolina in Tragic Early Morning Crash
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, SC- Wsoctv.com writes that a car struck a pedestrian in a fatal incident that took place on SC Highway 9 in Chesterfield County. The collision occurred close to Janice Circle near Cheraw.*
Police reports indicate that the victim was crossing the road when a northbound 2007 Honda struck the individual. The driver did not suffer any injuries in the accident. Police are still investigating and have not yet stated whether the driver will face charges in connection to the tragic crash.
Pedestrians face a great deal of risk in South Carolina. The state was recently ranked as the sixth deadliest in the nation for car crashes. Over the course of six years, 900 pedestrians and cyclists died in traffic accidents in the Palmetto State.
Nationally, pedestrians are not fairing well either, with the death toll from pedestrian incidents reaching its highest numbers in about three decades.
The tragedies are sparking some to implement changes such as improving bike paths, making the roads safer for foot traffic, and providing education to the public about traffic safety and risks.
Law enforcement officers are often bothered by the tragedies simply because of how easily they could be prevented. In many cases, police say that pedestrians could have crossed at a safer location, such as a marked crosswalk, simply by walking a short distance out of their way.
Unfortunately, making the roads safer will take time and funding. Building sidewalks and better roads will be extremely costly. The issue is complicated by the fact that many of these crashes occur at night and away from marked crosswalks or streetlights. Even improving just the major roadways is a massive undertaking, let alone the smaller streets where many of these collisions occur.
Still, experts say that there finally seems to be momentum when it comes to increasing safety.
