Deadly Motorcycle Crash Reported in Laurens County, South Carolina

March 21, 2020

LAURENS COUNTY, SC- Foxcarolina.com writes that a crash occurred in South Carolina this week during the evening involving a motorcycle and a sedan. The incident took place on SC-49 at its intersection with Curry Road. A motorcyclist traveling on a 2018 Harley Davidson collided with a 2003 Honda.*

The victim was a 54-year-old man from Donalds. Police reports indicate that the Honda was trying to make a left turn from SC-49 onto Curry Road when the motorcyclist struck the side of the vehicle. The victim was thrown from the bike. Reports indicate that the man was not using a helmet at the time of the wreck. The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured.

When it comes to motorcycle crashes, left turns are one of the leading causes of these fatal accidents. It is not the motorcyclist that is making the risky left turn, but the drivers who are turning and cutting into the path of the smaller vehicle. Of course, in these cases, it is the vehicle traveling straight that typically has the right-of-way. Drivers who are turning left often put motorcycles in danger by not noticing these smaller vehicles.

According to motorcycle safety experts, riders should approach intersections with caution and view turning cars as a threat to their safety. It may be wise to slow down when approaching intersections and to look at the vehicle's tires if it is waiting to turn. The tires give the earliest indication that the driver is likely to start their turn.

Of course, motorcyclists should also wear a helmet as this piece of safety equipment lowers the risk of fatal injuries.
