Truck and Sedan Collide in Tragic Accident in Lancaster County, South Carolina

March 11, 2020

LANCASTER, SC- HeraldOnline.com writes that one individual died in a crash in Lancaster County between a car and a semi-truck. The collision occurred in the midafternoon close to the site of the Buford Middle School.*

A driver operating a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling southbound on SC 522 when the driver veered off of the roadway and then tried to correct. The motorist then drifted over the center line and into oncoming traffic where the Malibu and a semi-truck collided head-on.

The driver in the Chevrolet died at the scene. Police have not yet identified the victim. While the incident occurred very close to the school, a spokesperson for the district stated that no one affiliated with the school was involved in the wreck.

Police are still investigating the incident. The site is also close to the Buford Elementary School and the Buford High School.

Head-on collisions involve immense forces that often lead to fatalities. These crashes can occur in a split second when a driver is not paying attention to the road ahead. According to safety advocates, better-designed roadways could greatly decrease the chances of these collisions occurring. While many high-speed highways and interstates are equipped with barriers between lanes of traffic, there are still too many roads where only painted lines are in place to prevent a vehicle from entering oncoming traffic. At just 43 miles per hour, head-on collisions will frequently result in deaths. This is true even in the case of cars that are about the same size, let alone when massive tractor-trailers are involved. Drivers wishing to avoid these deadly crashes should stick to well-divided roadways.
