Tragic, Fatal Accident at the intersection of Highway 278 and Gum Tree Road in Hilton Head, South Carolina

March 16, 2020

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC- Wtoc.com writes that one person was killed in a collision in Beauford County this week. The incident reportedly involved three vehicles. Reports indicate that one car drove through a red traffic signal at the intersection of Highway 278 and Gum Tree Road.*

The car that went through the light struck the passenger side of a vehicle that was already in the intersection and pushed it into a third vehicle. The driver who was operating the car that was struck at the intersection died in the wreck. Others suffered injuries in the collision and were transported to the hospital, but it is not clear how many people were harmed, and their conditions have not been reported at this time. Police are still investigating the incident.

Drivers run through red lights more often than many people would like to believe. Distracted drivers are a major problem, as are drunk drivers. When a motorist speeds through a red traffic signal, the results can be a deadly and devastating side-impact collision or T-bone crash. When it comes to side impacts, the occupants in the vehicle struck on its side are at the greatest risk of severe injuries or death. These people often will be close to the site of impact.

Side airbags are able to reduce the risk of death in T-bone crashes, but will not always be enough to save the occupants, especially in higher speed impacts. Additionally, side airbags are not mandated, and while most new cars have them, not all do. Safety experts recommend asking about whether a car has this equipment before purchasing a vehicle.

These crashes could be prevented by replacing cross-section intersections with roundabouts. Roundabouts are far better than traffic lights at slowing cars down and reducing all accidents, but especially the most dangerous wrecks.
