Six-Year-Old Girl Killed in Tragic Bus Stop Crash in Lancaster County, South Carolina

March 15, 2020

LANCASTER COUNTY, SC- 6abc.com writes that a horrible incident killed a six-year-old child at a school bus stop while she waited with her grandmother. The child was killed by a passing truck in the early morning. According to reports, the grandmother brought her granddaughter to the bus stop each day, and on the day of the fatal crash, they were standing and waiting on the sidewalk.*

A black truck came straight at the victim, striking the little girl. Responders rushed the victim to the Levine Children’s Hospital, but she passed away from her injuries later the same day. The child attended the Health Springs Elementary School and was accompanied by a parent or grandparent each time she walked to the school bus stop.

The driver operating the truck was identified as a 39-year-old woman. It is not yet clear whether the woman will be facing charges for the tragic collision.

Officials at the child’s school said that the incident led to “one of the darkest days” that the school’s employees would endure.

School buses are known as the safest vehicles a person can travel in on the road. While debates over adding seat belts in these vehicles have raged on for many years, some point out that the greatest risk to children who use school buses is getting to and from their bus. While the buses provide a great deal of protection for passengers, when children are walking to the bus, they can be struck by drivers, or even by the bus itself. One way to increase the safety of young bus riders would be to use stop sign cameras to catch drivers who drive past the bus while it is loading or unloading children. At the end of the day, pedestrians, regardless of where they are, seem to be facing high risks of being killed in collisions in America.
