Two-Vehicle Collision Leads to Injuries and Delays on US 278

March 02, 2020

BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC- Amp.islandpacket.com writes that a crash occurred this week on Fort Island Road. The incident took place in the early afternoon and caused the authorities to close two of the eastbound lanes.*

Reports indicate that items fell off of the bed of a pickup truck and a sedan behind that vehicle struck the debris. The images from the scene show a disabled car on the road, and another stopped on the median. Emergency vehicles were on the scene, and injuries were reported. The identity of those involved has not yet been released.

The incident appears to have occurred in the same spot that a fatal crash happened last month. The earlier incident killed two men from Ohio. The victims in that earlier accident were a 76-year-old man and a 78-year-old man who were both in a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta and tried to make a left turn at the intersection with Rose Avenue. The men’s vehicle was struck by a 2019 BMW that was traveling straight through the intersection.

Debris on the road often causes collisions. In fact, about 50,000 car crashes are caused by debris in the road every year. These incidents kill hundreds of people. Drivers are liable for the cargo they are carrying on the road. By failing to properly secure the items they are carrying, a driver places others in harm’s way. In cases where cars are traveling at high rates of speed, flying debris can strike a person in a car and cause fatalities. About 37 percent of crashes caused by debris are the result of drivers attempting to swerve out of the way of the object and losing control of their vehicle. In many situations, it is better to strike an object than it is to swerve.
