Police Car Involved in Spartanburg, South Carolina Wreck

February 10, 2020

SPARTANBURG, SC- Foxcarolina.com writes that a crash occurred earlier this week in Spartanburg between a police vehicle and another car in Spartanburg County. The incident took place in the afternoon on Catawba Street.*

It is not yet clear whether injuries were caused in the wreck. The location of the crash is close to the Spartanburg Medical Center. Images from the site of the collision show a police vehicle with damage to its front end and a black sedan at the police vehicle’s side. A sign for the hospital sustained damage in the incident and appeared to be knocked onto the black car.

When it comes to police officer safety, car crashes are the biggest threat. Studies indicate that except in a few rare cases, more police officers die in car crashes or because they are struck by a car than are killed in any other scenario.

When responding to the scene of collision police must work close to the flow of traffic, therefore, putting themselves at risk of being struck by a passing vehicle. Another cause for the high risk of car crash injuries and deaths is that police drive to the scene of emergencies. In cases where officers are trying to rush to a call, they may turn on their lights and sirens to instruct other motorists to get out of the way, but some drivers fail to understand their obligation to pull over and give the emergency vehicle the right-of-way. Unfortunately, many drivers end up confused by what to do when a police vehicle approaches, and the results can be hazardous to the officer and others on the road.
