Motorcyclist Dies in Tragic North Charleston Collision
CHARLESTON, SC- Live5news.com writes that a motorcyclist died in a fatal accident earlier this week in Charleston County. Police have identified the victim as a 28-year-old man from Summerville.*
The incident reportedly occurred in the early afternoon. Responders rushed the victim to the Trident Hospital, but he tragically died a short time after arriving. It appears that no other vehicles were involved in the wreck.
Motorcycles lack even the most basic safety equipment available in passenger cars. Specifically, two-wheeled vehicles have no seatbelts, airbags, or crumple-zones. Because they lack many safety features that are standard in passenger vehicles, and due to the fact that motorcycles are more challenging to operate, motorcyclists are at a far higher risk of sustaining fatal injuries in a crash than is a person in a car. In fact, the risk of death is a staggering 28 times greater for bikes than it is for other vehicle occupants.
Another problem faced by motorcyclists is that their vehicles are small, and drivers may not see them. This can cause a motorist to cut off the motorcycle, or to turn in front of the smaller vehicle. While these crashes will be the fault of the driver, the motorcyclist is the one who will likely sustain severe injuries from the impact.
It is important that motorcyclists take the steps necessary to protect themselves as best as possible. Wearing a helmet that is approved by the Department of Transportation can reduce the risk of death and severe brain injuries. Motorcyclists can also improve the chances of being more visible to other drivers by wearing reflective gear and bright-colored clothes.
When a biker approaches an intersection, it is prudent to slow down and use extra caution; many motorcyclists are killed because drivers turn left in front of them.
