Crash Kills One on Barrineau Road in Barrineau, South Carolina

December 08, 2019

BARRINEAU, SC- writes that a young man died in a traffic accident on Barrineau Road early in the morning over the weekend. Police identified the victim as a 23-year-old man from Lake City.*

Reports indicate that the victim was traveling alone in a 2008 GMC SUV when he veered off of the road and drove into a ditch where he struck a tree.

Reports indicate that the man did not have a seatbelt on at the time of the collision. Police say that the victim died at the scene.

Single-vehicle crashes involving a car driving off the roadway cause about one out of every five traffic crash fatalities. These collisions are typically avoidable because they are the result of drivers failing to pay attention, driving while they are too tired to focus, driving while under the influence, or traveling above the speed limit.

Weather can make these accidents more likely. For instance, slippery icy roads may cause a vehicle to slide off the street and into an object. However, even when the weather is a factor, drivers can often prevent crashes by using caution and driving slowly.

Of course, in order to reduce the risk of being in a fatal crash, everyone should always wear their seatbelt. Seatbelts save thousands of lives every year. A person who fails to buckle up is about 30 times as likely to be thrown from their vehicle in a crash as a person who does use their seatbelt. Even safety devices such as airbags can be rendered useless by failing to use a seatbelt because airbags are designed to deploy in such a way that they would protect a person who is also restrained.
