Car Strikes Pedestrian on West Tennessee Street in Tallahassee, Florida

December 08, 2019

TALLAHASSEE, FL- writes that a vehicle struck a person on West Tennessee Street. The crash took place late in the evening earlier this week. Reports indicate that the pedestrian sustained severe and life-threatening injuries. The driver was also harmed by the crash. Responders transported both to the hospital.*

The crash led to long delays in the area. Police are seeking witnesses to the collision. Anyone with information is instructed to call Crime Stoppers. Callers can remain anonymous when reporting information.

Florida is one of the most dangerous states for pedestrians. Many in the State say that the road design is to blame for the high rate of pedestrian deaths. As the population in Florida increased, road development focused on making the streets efficient for fast-moving vehicles. The situation is not suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. While the weather makes walking and cycling attractive, traffic means that these activities are potentially deadly.

There are many ways that Florida could improve its pedestrian safety. Accidents are more common at night because visibility is a primary concern and risk factor. Better lighting around intersections and crosswalks could help improve safety. Installing more bike lanes and crosswalks and adjusting the timing on crosswalks to improve pedestrian safety are all ways the State can work to protect foot traffic.

Of course, these changes are likely to take time and large amounts of resources. The good news for pedestrians is that vehicle manufacturers are now starting to improve vehicle technology so that cars alert drivers to the presence of pedestrians. Similar technology is credited for reducing vehicle occupant fatalities, and it could also improve road safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
