Woman Struck and Killed by Pickup Truck in Greenville County, South Carolina

November 21, 2019

GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC - Wyff4.com reports that a 36-year-old woman died early this week in the middle of the night after being struck by a pickup truck on Wade Hampton Boulevard. Reports indicate that the woman exited her vehicle, which she had pulled over into the median. The victim walked into the roadway where a vehicle struck her. Police declared the woman dead at the scene of the crash.*

Pedestrians and cyclists are dying by the hundreds in South Carolina. The State is now considered one of the most dangerous places for pedestrians. When accounted for per capita, South Carolina came in sixth out of all the states in the country. South Carolina is not the only place where pedestrians are at risk. Across the nation, more than 6,000 people are killed in pedestrian incidents each year.

According to law enforcement officers in the State, many of these issues are happening because pedestrians believe vehicles will stop for them. Cars are required to stop if a person is in a crosswalk as the vehicle is approaching. However, in many cases, a car simply cannot stop quickly enough to avoid striking a person if that pedestrian steps into the roadway unexpectedly. About 84 percent of pedestrians killed in South Carolina are crossing the road at night, indicating that visibility is a major problem for these accidents. About 83 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur outside of crosswalks. While the State acknowledges that something must be done to make the roads safer, fixing lighting at intersections and changing infrastructure only helps people crossing in designated areas. Still, the State plans to implement a complete streets program that would focus on making roads safer for everyone, including foot traffic and cyclists.
