Sumter Motorcyclist Tragically Dies in Three-Vehicle Accident; Authorities Searching for Second Motorcyclist who Fled Scene

SUMTER COUNTY, SC – According to an online news report at, a motorcyclist from Sumter, South Carolina tragically died in a three-vehicle accident on Lafayette.  The Sumter police are currently searching for a second motorcyclist that fled the scene of the accident.*

The motorcyclist, a male, aged 32, was pronounced dead at the scene of the three-vehicle accident, per the Sumter County coroner.  According to a public information officer with the Sumter Police Department, the accident occurred in the nighttime hours late last week on North Lafayette Drive between Loring drive and East Charlotte Avenue.

A 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer was turning left onto Lafayette Drive as he was exiting the Dollar General parking lot. He was hit by one of two motorcyclists that were headed northbound on the roadway.  The 32-year-old’s motorcycle struck the driver’s side of the Trailblazer, which caused the other motorcycle to spill.  Per the coroner, the 32-year-old was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.  The other motorcyclist, who is likely to have sustained injuries in the crash, fled the scene on foot and has yet to be identified.  

The driver of the Trailblazer, a 26-year-old man, from Dalzell, South Carolina, and one of his passengers, a 29-year old from Sumter, South Carolina, sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.  Another passenger in the Trailblazer was also taken to an area hospital for treatment.  This individual has not been identified. 

Police are currently searching for the motorcyclist who fled on foot.
