Man Tragically Killed in Motorcycle Accident on Highway 391 in Newberry County, South Carolina

October 21, 2019

NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC- Wistv.com writes that a deadly motorcycle accident occurred earlier this week in Newberry County. The victim was a seventy-five-year-old man who was operating a motorcycle on Highway 391.*

The crash involved the motorcycle and another vehicle. Officials have not yet stated the cause of the accident. Reports indicate that the victim died from blunt force trauma and was not using a helmet at the time of the crash.

Motorcycle helmets help to prevent severe injuries and death. Many motorcyclists choose not to use helmets and knowingly risk more severe injuries. While some parts of the country have made helmets mandatory, other places have not, and some states have no motorcycle helmet laws on the books at all. Helmet laws are a controversial topic within the biker community as even many motorcyclists who do use helmets believe that the choice belongs to the rider and not the government. In South Carolina, 64 percent of motorcyclists killed in accidents were not using helmets.

Motorcyclists face many risks on the road because of the risks inherent to their vehicles. In addition to the fact that motorcycles provide little in the way of protection for riders, they also tend to be overlooked by drivers of larger vehicles. This can be a problem because drivers may change lanes without noticing a driver in their blind spot or make a left turn in front of a motorcycle that they failed to see approaching.

While drivers need to be cautious and remember to share the road with all motorists, there are steps motorcyclists can take to reduce their risk of being killed in a car crash. Wearing bright clothing and DOT approved helmets are two things that can help keep motorcyclists safer on the road.
