Playgrounds are a place that is supposed to be fun and exciting for children. However, they can pose a risk of hidden dangers. Per the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every year, hospital emergency rooms treat over 200,000 children ages 14 and younger due to injuries that arise at playgrounds. The majority of these accidents occur at daycare facilities and schools.
The injuries sustained by children at playgrounds can be life-threatening. The CDC indicates that playgrounds cause more serious injuries than automobile and bicycle accidents. There are a number of factors at play in an accident. Most injuries on playgrounds are sustained when a child is swinging, climbing, or sliding. If a child slips while climbing, he or she can fall several feet to the group, resulting in serious injuries. Slips on jungle gyms or climbing bars can also cause a child to fall against hard objects on these apparatuses. The following are the most common playground-related injuries:
- Bone fractures
- Head injuries such as concussions
- Dislocations such as to a shoulder
- Injuries that can result in internal bleeding
