Recall Issued Over Cancer Risk Associated With Blood Pressure Medications

October 01, 2019

USA- writes that the FDA has added another medication to the list blood pressure medications recalled over the risk of cancer. Certain batches of Losartan Potassium tablets manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Limited are now subject to the recall.*

This medication is used to treat patients diagnosed with several conditions, including hypertension and nephropathy in patients with Type 2 diabetes.

According to the recall announcement, the tablets may contain trace amounts of a known carcinogen, N-Methylnitrosobutyric acid. The FDA stated that patients using the medication should contact their doctors before stopping their medications.

So far, there are no reported instances of adverse effects related to this medication and the contamination.

When companies manufacture pharmaceuticals, cautious precision is required. If the drug has even a small amount of something unintended included, this can have major impacts on the way the medication functions. Contaminated drugs can present massive risks to patients, including causing a lifesaving medication to become less effective, or even actively poisoning a person because of some toxic contaminant.

In order to protect consumers, drugs are tested for contaminants. Different contaminants can be inside of medications as a result of some flaw in the manufacturing process. Sometimes this is the result of human error, as in when a worker comes in contact with the manufacturing machinery, the packaging or other materials involved in the process. Unclean or otherwise inadequate conditions at a manufacturing facility can also cause something like bacteria to spread to the manufacturing area. Old machinery can also contaminate a product through corrosion. Of course, raw materials used in making a medication may also lead to contamination of the final product. There are a number of checks on these products in order to try to catch and prevent contamination.
