GM Recalls 3.5 Million Vehicles for Dangerous Braking Issue

UNITED STATES – According to a news report published online at, automaker General Motors is recalling 3.5 million vehicles because of a potentially dangerous braking issue that can lead to accidents and injuries. The issue is associated with more than 100 accidents to date and 13 injuries.*

A vacuum pump in certain GM vehicles can degrade over time and lead to issues with braking. If the vacuum pump is not operating correctly, drivers might have trouble braking, need more pressure to completely brake and more time to come to a complete stop. The brakes in the vehicles might also fail completely due to the issue.

The brake issue applies to certain SUVs and pickup trucks manufactured by GM. Vehicles included in the recall are:

  • 2014 – 2018 Chevrolet Silverado
  • 2014 – 2018 GMS Cierra
  • 2014 – 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe
  • 2014 – 2018 Chevrolet Suburban
  • 2014 – 2018 Cadillac Escalade
  • 2014 – 2018 GMC Yukon

The braking issue came to light when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigated several vehicle accidents in late 2018 and found that nine accidents were related to the issue, resulting in injuries to two people. GM launched its own investigation after that and concluded that the vacuum pump could be affected over time by debris buildup on the filter. The seriousness of injuries linked to the issue was not reported.

GM will be notifying owners of affected vehicles about the recall and will provide them with information about what to do next. Owners will be able to take their vehicles to local dealerships for repairs at no cost. In the meantime, owners who are wondering if their vehicles are included in the recall — or any outstanding recall — can visit the website for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and enter their vehicle identification numbers (VINs).
