Zantac Cancer Lawsuit Attorneys - Probable Carcinogen Found in OTC Zantac
FDA Alerts Public to Probable Carcinogen in Zantac
UNITED STATES – According to an online news report posted at dayton247now.com, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has alerted the public to the presence of a probable carcinogen in the drug Zantac. Zantac is a prescription drug that also has an over-the-counter version, used to treat heartburn and stomach ulcers.*
The FDA announced on September 13 that it was looking into an impurity detected in prescription and OTC Zantac, as well as the generic forms of the drug. The chemical was found in low levels in the drug, but the FDA deemed it a probable carcinogen, which means it likely causes cancer in humans when ingested in certain amounts.
The level of the chemical found in Zantac is only slightly higher than levels found in everyday foods, the FDA indicated, and patients should not stop taking their medications at this time. The impurity was also recently detected in blood pressure medications distributed in the United States, and the FDA ended up placing sanctions on a manufacturing facility in India due to the contamination issue, according to the news report.
Sanofi, the manufacturer of Zantac, said in a public statement that the company was working with the FDA on the matter and that it took patient safety seriously. Patients who are concerned about continuing to take Zantac should talk to their doctors. Concerned patients who are taking over-the-counter Zantac should talk to a doctor about an alternative.
Approximately 80 percent of the components in drugs sold in the United States are now manufactured outside of the country. Most drug ingredients are made in China and India, according to information from the Government Accountability Office. The FDA has been working to keep up with changing manufacturing processes in order to fully regulate drugs sold in the United States.
