More than 193,000 Vehicles on South Carolina Roads with Recalled Airbags

September 18, 2019

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announced recently that an estimated 193,000 vehicles are in use in the state despite having been recalled due to defective airbags. An astounding 44,000 of the recalled cars, trucks, and sports utility vehicles are in regular use in the Columbia metropolitan region. According to a report by WACH Fox 57, public safety officials said that car dealerships would perform the recall service free of charge for the vehicle owner or lessee. One citizen of the Columbia area interviewed by WACH summed up the purpose of airbags succinctly when he described airbags as the first line of defense in a car wreck. *

Defective airbags seriously endanger the occupants of a vehicle involved in a crash. Defective airbags could turn a survivable accident into a fatal accident. Consequently, it is vitally important for everyone who drives to have confidence that the vehicle’s safety systems will operate as intended. One cannot be certain if their car’s airbags are reliable unless the recall work has been performed.

The largest airbag recall program involves Takata airbags. Takata airbag failures are not easy to pinpoint because the company’s safety devices were installed by almost 20 vehicle manufacturers spanning dozens of models.

A spokesperson for Fiat Chrysler said the company is spreading the word to people who own Fiat Chrysler vehicles to check to see if their vehicles are under recall. The spokesperson noted that airbags installed in vehicles operating in hot and humid climates could deteriorate with the passage of time. Motorists should be concerned about whether the airbags in their car will deploy safely and, therefore, should strive to determine if their cars are under recall.

Takata airbag failures are responsible for numerous fatalities in car accidents that would have been survivable. However, the defective airbags killed and injured dozens after the inflation devices exploded and sent shrapnel through the airbag and into the motorist.
