Child Injured During Trampoline Accident in the United Kingdom
UNITED KINGDOM – According to a news report posted online at foxnews.com, a child was injured during a trampoline accident that happened in the United Kingdom. One of the coils on the trampoline reportedly dislodged and punctured the child’s back. The coil narrowly missed the child’s spine, according to the news report.*
The incident happened when a twelve-year-old boy was jumping on a friend’s trampoline. While the children were jumping, one of the metal coils that attached the trampoline material to the frame shot loose and struck the boy in his back. The coil released with such force that it reportedly became lodged about two inches deep inside the boy’s back. The report says this was mere centimeters away from his spine.
The child was immediately taken to Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where he had surgery to remove the coil. He is now recovering from the incident, and he told reporters that he is thankful the incident was not worse. His family members say they want people to understand that trampolines can be real hazards to kids.
“It could have happened to anyone,” the boy’s father said. “[He] has been so brave. I want people to be aware of how dangerous trampolines can be if there’s no cover on the springs or if there’s a gap. The spring had come off the trampoline like a bullet. If it had hit elsewhere on [his] body, in his head or throat, we could have lost him.”
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission indicates that thousands of people are injured on trampolines annually in the United States. In 2012, 94,000 visits to the emergency room were related to trampoline injuries. Younger children are particularly at risk for serious injuries on trampolines, with concussions, neck injuries, and broken bones being the most common types of trampoline injuries.
